Problem.
Breast implants have become distorted by scar tissue or have ruptured.
Who is a candidate?
- A woman who previously had breast augmentation and who has developed fibrous capsular contracture of the breasts, who has had rupture of an implant, or who wishes to exchange her silicone gel implants for saline implants.
Procedure description.
Incisions are made at the site of existing scars under general anesthesia at CHRISTUS ST. JOHN HOSPITAL. The implants and associated scar tissue are removed and replaced with saline implants.
Recuperation and healing.
Patients go home the day of surgery. Sutures are removed within 10 days.

Additional information.
Removal of implants and associated scar tissue is sometimes covered by insurance. Re-insertion of implants is not covered.

Complementary procedures.
A breast lift performed in conjunction with implant removal or replacement can oftentimes enhance the results.
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
